While perusing Google Reader again this evening, I took a look at a blog, "Music Matters - A blog on music cognition." I found this entry containing a video of Oliver Sacks (neurologist, anthropologist and author of "Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain") on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart talking about why musical training should be part of early education.
Check out the blog entry which includes the video
here.
I think it's awesome that this topic is being discussed (even in a lighthearted manner) on a popular television show. I haven't read "Musicophilia" yet, but I bet it would be a great resource as well, maybe even for the support of music programs in school.
I want to talk about something that you touched on. I think that music getting some spotlight on popular television is a wonderful thing. I think that it is very cool that a program thought that it would be a good idea to talk about a musical subject.
ReplyDeleteThis means to me that people are becoming more aware that music is a staple in our culture. I am excited to see how far this coverage can go.
I recently heard an interview with Oliver Sacks regarding this book. (On an NPR program perhaps?) It sounds quite interesting. This may be a useful resource for music advocacy purposes.
ReplyDeleteNice post, Allison! Sacks has done some really great stuff with music and the brain; I really enjoy reading about it.

Oliver Sacks is one of the most interesting authors I have ever read. About Music Matters- I have been reading it for a couple of weeks now, and I think it is my favorite blog that I'm currently subscribed to. I find the information useful, stimulating and insightful as applied to my future career all at once.
